Future Planning In Uncertain Times.
Future Planning In Uncertain Times.
This past Wednesday, I attended Achieva Family Trust’s Future Planning Conference, “Future Planning In Uncertain Times.” In my roles as an estate planning and guardianship attorney, a family member of someone with special needs, and a provider under the Pennsylvania waiver program, I found this conference to be incredibly helpful. There were speaker sessions on government benefits, the PA waiver program, and special needs trusts. I learned so much and connected with some wonderful people.
A few things I want to highlight:

1) Achieva Family Trust has a benefits counseling program. If you have questions about which government benefits program your loved one with special needs should apply to, Matt Bailey and his team may be able to advise you:
2) A great pro-bono legal organization I learned about is the PA Health Law Project: https://www.phlp.org/en/. People can call PHLP at 412-434-4728 when they:
- Are denied or terminated from Medicaid or Waiver.
- Need help understanding how Medicaid and Medicare work together.
- Are seeking information about Medicaid or programs to help with Medicare costs.
- Are denied services by their Medicaid plan.
- Have trouble accessing Medicaid- or Waiver-covered services.
3) Lastly, Achieva Family Trust has a lot of good resources and past webinar recordings on their website. Special needs planning is an overwhelmingly complex space and there is a lot to learn, but trying to educate yourself little bit by little bit can make a difference.
